The remarkable feat of tying light in knots has been achieved by a team of physicists working at the universities of Bristol, Glasgow and Southampton, UK, reports a paper in Nature Physics this week.
Literally hundreds of people are hurrying through the long airport corridor between Terminals A and B. Among them are two terrorists, who've hidden themselves in the crowd. They're carrying small containers of chemicals in their jacket pockets, individual components for an explosive. But there's something the criminals don't know. As well as being observed by security cameras, they're also being "sniffed out" by chemical noses hidden in the corridor wall. The smell sensors sound the alarm when the terrorists walk past, alerting an airport security guard who notes the problem on his monitoring equipment. At this point in time, he can't tell precisely who is carrying hazardous chemicals – but he knows the sensor network will continue to "sniff out" and track down the suspects.
Rydberg atoms are highly sensitive atoms, as one electron is only loosely bound. Compared to „normal“ atoms which are one tenth of a nanometer in size those giant atoms are ~100 nanometers large. Due to their sensitivity they are very useful for quantum logic operations. As they can feel each other over distances up to several micrometers they can be used as conditional switches for quantum states, for example to connect nodes of a quantum network.
Oclaro, Inc. (Nasdaq: OCLR), a provider of optical components for industrial applications, today unveiled the industry's lowest price / highest performance 8xx nm fiber-coupled laser diode and will be showcasing the new Orion™ platform at Photonics West in San Francisco, Calif. The latest Orion fiber-coupled diode laser is one-half the size and 1.5x the brightness of competitive products in its category and delivers 30W of power at 808nm and 35W of power at 880nm wavelengths, with 95% of the light contained within a 0.15NA from a 200um core diameter fiber.
OFS has introduced LaserWave® FLEX multimode fiber, a bend-optimized 50 micron OM4/OM3 multimode fiber designed for use in data center, high performance computing, and enterprise LAN applications. The reduced bending loss exhibited by the fiber at a bend radius as low as 7.5 mm brings outstanding bend performance to OFS' industry-leading LaserWave 550/300 fibers.
Prysm, Inc., today announced the public launch of its groundbreaking technology, Laser Phosphor Display (LPD). LPD is a new category of large format displays, with the lowest power consumption and environmental impact along with freeform flexibility, long-lasting performance and brilliant picture quality.
According to Market Scope, a refractive industry research organization, the number of LASIK vision correction surgeries performed during the first quarter of the year is 124 percent of the average quarterly volume. With health-related New Year’s resolutions, the resetting of annual flexible health care spending accounts and summer just around the corner, it certainly stands to reason, according to Dr. Ayman Boutros of The Eye Center.
TRIA Beauty, the leader in light-based therapeutic beauty devices, today announced it received an additional over-the-counter (OTC) clearance from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its flagship product, TRIA Laser Hair Removal System (LHRS). The TRIA laser is now FDA-cleared for permanent hair reduction, making it the first and only at-home hair removal device clinically proven to deliver permanent results.
Northwestern University researchers have developed compact, mid-infrared laser diodes that generate more light than heat – a breakthroughs in quantum cascade laser efficiency.
Rudolph Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: RTEC), a worldwide leader in process characterization solutions for the semiconductor manufacturing industry, announced today that it has received multiple orders for its NSX® and WaferScanner™ Inspection Systems from STATS ChipPAC Ltd.
