AMD LASERS Obtains ISO 13485:2003 Certification

AMD LASERS today announced it has attained International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 13485:2003 certification of its medical device quality management system in North America, Canada, and the European Union. In addition, the quality management system demonstrates conformance to the Medical Device Directive 93/42/EEC, allowing the products to be CE marked, which makes them available to be sold in the European Economic Area.

AMD LASERS Announces Picasso Dental Lasers Sales Have More Than Tripled Expectations

AMD LASERS, with global headquarters in Indianapolis, IN, today announced that projected sales of the Picasso soft tissue dental lasers have more than tripled expectations in the first year. The March FDA market clearance of Picasso signaled the beginning in a series of dental laser products to be developed and launched over the next few years by the locally owned and operated company.

Researchers Demonstrate that Street Lights Can Save Energy with Unified System of Photometry

Experts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Lighting Research Center (LRC) estimate that about half of the approximately 13 million streetlights in America have the opportunity to significantly reduce energy consumption by as much as 50 percent, translating to an annual savings of 1 billion kWh, and a reduction in power plant CO2 emissions of 546,000 tons per year.

Particle accelerators are among the largest and most expensive scientific instruments. Thirty years ago, theorists John Dawson and Toshiki Tajima proposed an idea for making them thousands of times smaller: surf the particles on plasma waves driven by short intense laser pulses. Since plasmas are free of the damage limits of conventional accelerators, much larger fields can be built up within such waves, enabling much smaller accelerators.

Scientists Observe Reverse Shock Wave of Light in Left-Handed Metamaterial

A team of physicists has directly observed a reverse shock wave of light in a specially tailored structure known as a left-handed metamaterial. Although it was first predicted over forty years ago, this is the first unambiguous experimental demonstration of the effect. The research is reported in Physical Review Letters and highlighted with a Viewpoint in the November 2 issue of Physics.

Evidence Demonstrates Cosmic Rays Likely Powered by Exploding Stars and Stellar Winds

Nearly 100 years ago, scientists detected the first signs of cosmic rays - subatomic particles (mostly protons) that zip through space at nearly the speed of light. The most energetic cosmic rays hit with the punch of a 98-mph fastball, even though they are smaller than an atom. Astronomers questioned what natural force could accelerate particles to such a speed. New evidence from the VERITAS telescope array shows that cosmic rays likely are powered by exploding stars and stellar "winds."

SANYO North America Opens New Photovoltaic Manufacturing Facility in Salem Energy and Technology Park

SANYO North America Corporation (SANYO), a subsidiary of and the North American regional headquarters of SANYO Electric Co., Ltd., based in San Diego, announces that the newest manufacturing plant for photovoltaic products, SANYO Solar of Oregon LLC, has officially opened in the Salem Energy and Technology Park, and production has officially started. The plant, located in Salem, Oregon, will be producing silicon ingots and wafers, core materials to manufacture SANYO’s patented HIT (Heterjunction with Intrinsic Thin-layer) solar cells and modules that have the world’s highest solar light to electric energy conversion efficiency per installed square foot. While initial production has officially started, the plant plans to reach its full production capacity of 70-Megawatts annually by April 2010.
