GlobeNet and Level 3 to Offer Transport and HSIP Services in South America

Level 3 Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: LVLT) today announced that the company has established a multi-service relationship with GlobeNet, an international provider of submarine cable transmission capacity, to enable Level 3 and GlobeNet to offer transport and high-speed Internet services to satisfy the growth in communications demand in South America.

Through the relationship, Level 3 will be able to offer its high-speed Internet protocol (HSIP) services packaged with GlobeNet’s sub-sea cable capacity on routes between South America and North America. GlobeNet will be able to offer its sub-sea cable capacity packaged with Level 3’s HSIP services.

“With the increasing desire for high-quality global communications, it is crucial for network enablers to leverage infrastructure that is scalable, efficient, and capable of operating across the Americas,” said Erick Contag, chief operating officer for GlobeNet. “We are pleased that our relationship with Level 3 will extend our international capabilities and increase our customers’ access to premium data and IP services.”

Broadband penetration, including the deployment of 3G/4G wireless networks and fixed line triple and quadruple plays (voice, video, internet, and wireless) are contributing to the significant demand for bandwidth in South America. The combination of GlobeNet’s sub-sea, low-latency network and Level 3’s HSIP services allows Level 3 and GlobeNet to enhance their ability to meet the rising demand for Internet and data capacity in South America as well as offer broad service packages to their respective customers across North America, South America, and Europe.

With approximately 54,000 long-haul fiber route miles and 27,000 metro fiber miles spanning 190 markets in 22 countries, Level 3 offers a broad portfolio of telecommunications services, including voice over internet protocol (VoIP), transport, data, collocation, and content delivery.
