Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Teknovus, a leading supplier of Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) chipsets and software. EPON is a technology providing broadband services at up to 10 Gigabits per second over fiber optic cables. EPON represents approximately 94% of the FTTx (e.g. Fiber-to-the-Home) connections in the Asia Pacific region. According to the Dell’Oro Group, the Asia Pacific PON market is expected to grow from 22.8 million to 94.5 million subscribers by 2014, a CAGR of 33% (2009-2014).
MIT researchers have demonstrated the first laser built from germanium that can emit wavelengths of light useful for optical communications. It's also the first germanium laser to operate at room temperature. Unlike the materials typically used in lasers, germanium is easy to incorporate into existing processes for manufacturing silicon chips. So the result could prove an important step toward computers that move data — and maybe even perform calculations — using light instead of electricity.
JDSU (NASDAQ: JDSU and TSX: JDU) today announced its next-generation wavelength selective switch (WSS) module, the Mini 50 Gigahertz (GHz) WSS. Providing optical components that help network equipment manufacturers and service providers optimize networks has become increasingly important as consumers continue to access more bandwidth-intensive applications, such as video, over the internet.
Luxtera, the worldwide leader in Silicon CMOS Photonics, today announced its collaboration with Siemon, a leading global manufacturer of IT cabling infrastructure systems. Based on Luxtera’s 40Gbp/s single-mode fiber transceivers, Siemon introduces its Moray™ Active Optical Cabling (AOC) product family. Siemon’s Moray™ AOC launch expands Siemon’s extensive portfolio of copper and fiber data center solutions. By collaborating with Luxtera, Siemon enables its customers to work with a single data center solutions provider to achieve high performance and extended reach optical interconnect at lower cost than legacy multimode fiber.
Opnext, Inc. (NASDAQ:OPXT), a global leader in state-of-the-art laser technology and high speed optical communications, today announced that it has developed the world's first ultra-high speed Surface Mount Technology (SMT) multiplexer Integrated Circuit (IC) for 100Gbps applications.
FiberLight, LLC, a leading optical networking provider, announced today they are constructing a new 100-mile fully diverse network linking Baltimore to Washington, D.C.
Light is better than radio waves when it comes to some wireless communications, according to Penn State engineers. Optical communications systems could provide faster, more secure communications with wider bandwidth and would be suitable for restricted areas like hospitals, aircraft and factories.
The January issue of the premier scientific magazine Nature Photonics publishes an ultra-small and fast, electrically pumped all-optical memory on a silicon chip with record low power consumption. This result achieved by imec and its associated laboratory INTEC at the Ghent University, paves the way for optical packet switching with drastically reduced overall power consumption in high-speed, high-data rate optical telecommunication systems.
Infinera (Nasdaq: INFN) has achieved TL 9000 registration for its major facilities in the US and India, confirmation of the world-class standards applied by Infinera to all its operations throughout the Infinera supply chain. TL 9000 is a demanding international standard for quality processes in the telecommunications industry, including requirements for all major management and measurement systems.
Alcatel-Lucent today made it easier and cheaper for service providers to manage the dramatic growth of IP traffic in backbone networks with the introduction of the Alcatel-Lucent 1870 Transport Tera Switch (TTS).
