Solar power is the technology of obtaining usable energy from the light of the Sun. Solar energy has been used in many traditional technologies for centuries and has come into widespread use where other power supplies are absent, such as in remote locations and in space.
In these days of advanced technologies and increasing levels of eco pollution, energy consumption is touching new heights. With non-renewable sources such as oil and coal depleting rapidly, the world is on the lookout for new alternative sources of energy. The search for best-suited alternative sources of energy for the future has led to major developments in the areas of solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, fuel cells, and biomass energies. Various forms of energy that were successfully commercialized include wind and solar energies.
ICP Solar Technologies Inc. (OTCBB:ICPR) (FWB:K1U), a developer and marketer of innovative, proprietary solar panels and products, announces that as part of its 2010 growth strategy, ICP Solar plans to enter the lucrative solar energy utility sector which is gaining significant momentum in North America and abroad. ICP announced today that as a first step in its new strategic direction, it has entered into a binding LOI (“LOI”) with EPOD Erneuebare Energien, (“EEE”) to acquire a 9% stake in its wholly owned subsidiary, Volkersleier GmbH & Co-KG, a 730kw producing photovoltaic solar facility, located in Volkersleier, Germany, with an option for ICP to buy the remaining stake in Volkersleier; additional terms are outlined in a Form 8K to be filed with the SEC.
Senator Gail Schwartz of Colorado, School Superintendent Robert Alejo, and Mayor Kathy Rogers, today celebrated the activation of the 835 (kW) DC solar photovoltaic power system at Alamosa High School. The solar system will be used to provide a portion of the power needs for the school district over the next 20 years. SunEdison, a subsidiary of MEMC Electronic Materials (NYSE: WFR), and North America’s largest solar energy service provider, financed and built the system at no upfront capital cost to the school system. The solar power array will produce over 27 million kilowatt hours of electricity over 20 years. That is enough energy to power over 2,600 homes for one year.
Expected to Be in Operation by Spring 2010
SunRay Renewable Energy, a leading independent solar power producer, and SunPower Corp. ( SPWRA, SPWRB), a manufacturer of high-efficiency solar cells, solar panels and solar systems, today announced that the Montalto di Castro solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant, the largest in Italy, has been completed and is contributing clean, renewable solar power to Italy's national electric grid. The two companies announced the completion of the system at an interactive conference on renewable sources, Re-Event, being held this week in Rome.
LDK Solar Co., Ltd. (NYSE: LDK), a leading manufacturer of multicrystalline solar wafers, announced today that it has signed an agreement with Uni Land S.p.A., an Italian company listed on the Italian Stock Market with operations in land banking, real estate development and renewable energies, to develop and construct PV plants totaling 20 megawatts (MW) in 2010 and 2011.
The biggest problem with solar panels is they cost too much for the power they generate. AccuStrata Inc. is developing a technology that could change that.
Due to the sharp drop in polysilicon price, most solar cell manufacturers have reduced the price, which led to a fall of most manufacturers' earnings. However, as to the output, most of them keep it the same to 2008 or more.
The Ministry of Finance of the People's Republic of China released its list of "Golden Sun Demonstration Projects" in December, which includes 222 on-grid photovoltaic projects, 18 off-grid photovoltaic systemh projects and 35 large photovoltaic plants. Astronergy Solar has been awarded six of these projects, with a combined capacity of 7.86 MW.
