Infinera Demonstrates 100 Gigabit Ethernet Interoperability in Tokyo

A demonstration of 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) transmission using NTT Communications over a live network has been successfully completed in the outskirts of Tokyo by Infinera recently.

An Infinera DTN system was used in the illustration that involved in a 100 GbE signal being handed off from a router to a prototype 100 GbE Infinera module. The demonstration that took place in Tokyo marked an important step in the development of commercial 100 GbE technology, as it involves interoperability of 100 GbE components as well as systems from many technology vendors.

The demonstration makes use of Opnext IEEE-compliant 100 GbE LR4 CFP optical transceivers in an Infinera 100 GbE module along with an IP router. The DTN 100 interface module complies with the CFP MSA and the latest IEEE 802.3ba draft specification. Infinera is concurrently working with other service providers to comply on common standards for 100 GbE technology and services.

Drew Perkins, CTO of Infinera, stated that his company was working towards gaining commercial standardization and wide interoperability for 100 GbE services. Tadayuki Kanno, President of the Opnext module, claimed that the company’s manufacturing excellence and efforts to achieve compliance with the emerging standards in 10G, 40G and 100G products would assist system providers in efficiently addressing the challenges in their networks.
