Research Report on Commercial and Dual-Use Infrared Imaging Equipment Markets

Maxtech International, Inc. is releasing the 2013 edition of its market research report on commercial and dual-use infrared imaging equipment markets (Vol. IRW-C).

World infrared imaging markets continue to evolve rapidly. After double digit growth rates during the last five years, these markets took a pause in 2012 at $3 billion. The reason for this appears to be a combination of events in the various end-user markets, including thermography (temperature measurements), automotive night vision, fire fighting, aircraft Enhanced Vision Systems, and dual-use uncooled sights.

One of the primary objectives of this report is to analyze the reasons for this slowdown in some sectors while others continue to grow.

Despite this slowdown, there is considerable ferment in infrared markets and these markets are poised to grow as new uncooled focal plane arrays (FPAs) are developed and processing costs continue to drop steeply. This is partly due to an increasing number of uncooled FPA suppliers (two more in 2012) that are partnering with semiconductor fabs in order to take advantage of their economies of scale. All uncooled FPA suppliers are now developing wafer-level-packaging (WLP) so as to reduce costs.

In addition, new uncooled FPA suppliers have emerged in South Korea, China and Turkey and new materials are being used in microbolometers.

At the low end, prices of general purpose Thermography cameras have been reduced to less than $900 and tool companies are starting to enter the market. New emerging general-purpose applications are emerging to couple infrared imagers to smartphones at even lower prices.

Meanwhile, cooled infrared detector markets are expected to continue to grow due to technological improvements in superlattice detectors and high operating temperature ("HOT") FPAs.
