Emerald Networks, an operator and owner of subsea cable systems has declared that the company intends to complete the deployment of an increased capacity, low latency, transatlantic, submarine cable system by the spring of 2013, to meet increased density data demands between Europe and the U.S. With a major investment from the Wellcome Trust, it has selected Jefferies & Company, a global finance firm, to achieve a 300 M USD fundraise to support the project.
The submarine cable system of Emerald Systems is a newly constructed 5,200 kms network between Europe and North America, intended to carry an information highway across the Atlantic at a 100 Gbps per channel transmission rate. Emerald Express will be one of the fastest networks across the Atlantic with an assumed latency of less than 62 ms, round trip from New York to London. Linking Belmullet on the West Coast of Ireland and Shirley, New York (Long Island), with a diversified unit to Grindavik, Iceland, the route offers the most innovative, strong and secured connection between the financial markets of New York and London. The transatlantic cable route from New York to Ireland, with a branch link into Iceland, offers a protected, premium environment link supported by an economic, renewable energy sources. Emerald Networks' fibre optic cable is designed at 100 waves x 100 Gbps per Fibre Pair with 60Tbit total transatlantic design capacity. The current subsea cables have come to an end whereas the operational cost for its maintenance becomes unrealistic, demanding an accelerated, low latency systems like Emerald Networks, which would leverage the utilization of the recent coherent technology .
