Lighting Science Group has won the bid to illuminate the streets in Washington, D.C. with the PROLIFIC series LED street lights. The LED lights will offer more savings in maintenance and energy costs as they offer high light levels and even distribution of light compared to conventional HPS street lights.
The funding for the light fixtures comes from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Fixture installation will start in the beginning of 2011 in alleys throughout the district from wards 7 and 8.
The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) intends to install the fixtures in running and bike trails, pedestrian walkways, underpasses, tunnels, bridges, streets, and alleys across the city.
DDOT and Howard University Transportation Research Center analyzed the LED lighting solutions from various manufacturers and vendors. The study included the analysis of compatibility, dimmability, color temperature, aesthetics, efficiency, fixture lifespan, and photometric readings with control systems and remote monitoring. After conducting the study, DDOT chose the PROLIFIC LSR-2 LED fixtures as appropriate replacements for the current lights in the District.
