QLT Ophthalmics Signs Co-Promotion Deal to Distribute Activis PDT Lasers

QLT Ophthalmics (QOI), a wholly-owned subsidiary of QLT, Quantel USA and Quantel Medical have signed a co-promotion deal to distribute Activis PDT Lasers.

QLT specializes in developing therapies for eye treatment and QOI commercializes QLT’s pharmaceutical solutions for the ophthalmic field. Quantel Medical deals in laser photocoagulators and ocular ultrasound systems, while Quantel USA is Quantel Medical’s distributor.

The Activis PDT lasers are primarily utilized to activate Visudyne in photodynamic treatment of classic lesions in wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The Visudyne therapy is a two-step procedure. First, a drug is administered intravenously into the arm of the patient and then a laser light is directed into the eye for drug activation. Quantel Medical manufactures the Activis PDT lasers, while Quantel USA distributes them.

The agreement will allow Quantel USA to finalize the sales and accept orders for the lasers, while QOI will handle the marketing rights. Quantel USA will receive a flat fee for lasers distributed in the U.S. market.
