NSN to Provide Optical Transmission Network to NBN

Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) announced that it has been selected by NBN to provide its widespread optical transmission network. NBN was established by the Australian government to develop and operate the country’s high-speed National Broadband Network.

The optical network technology from NSN is being utilized for the new network. The network technology offers huge bandwidth to transmit large amounts of information. The contract signed by both companies is valued at a maximum of US$ 390 million over 10 years.

Under the terms of the agreement, NSN will provide its DWDM management systems and devices, in addition to associated services such as local pre-deployment system testing, commissioning, installation, logistics and design. The company’s transmission network needs connectivity at 100, 40, and 10 Gbps. The project’s network development phase will take approximately 10 years with majority of the transmission network to be introduced in the initial three years.

NBN plans to offer 100 Mbps broadband speed at the beginning stage and 1 Gbps in the future to approximately 93% of workplaces, schools and homes in Australia.
