Manufacturer of power management semiconductors, Intersil has announced the new ISL97671/2/3/4 series of multi-channel LED drivers. The Intersil LED drivers offer ultra-low dimming ability to maximize the battery life of tablet computers, netbook, and notebook.
The LED drivers minimize unwanted backlight-induced visual artifacts including banding, shimmering and flickering that are noticed while utilizing traditional LED drivers. The multi-channel LED drivers reduce power loss with the use of a dynamic headroom control circuit to identify the maximum voltage LED string. Then the boost output is regulated to the lowest required voltage.
The ISL97671/2/3/4 series drives a maximum of six 40 mA LED strings from an input of 4.5 – 26 V. The devices comprise a boost converter for the step-up of input voltage for supporting LED stack voltages of as much as 45 V. The phase shift capability of the LED drivers switch the LED strings on at a particular phase, minimizing peak input current with the distribution of channel currents in the dimming period.
To maintain high reliability, the LED drivers have various protection features including LED short/ open circuit protection, over-voltage protection, and over-temperature protection. The drivers incorporate power MOSFETs for the channel regulation circuitry and boost converter, thereby offering design flexibility in a compact device.
