Ensphere Uses TowerJazz’s SiGe BiCMOS Procedure to Develop Optical Transceiver IC

TowerJazz announced that Ensphere Solutions, developer of custom and standard mixed signal transceivers, has selected its 0.18 micron SiGe BiCMOS procedure for the optical transceiver IC targeting storage area and 10 G data communication network applications.

The ESI-1002 optical transceiver IC allows SFP+ units to be developed with a power consumption of sub-1 W and supports data rates from 1G to 12 G.

Ensphere is utilizing the SiGe BiCMOS procedure that incorporates a high-density 4.0 µf/mm² MIM cap, a 0.18 µm CMOS transistor, and 177 GHz Fmax. The process was selected for optimization of optical networking solutions as well as tuner, wireline, and wireless applications.

The ESI-1002 optical transceiver IC forms a comprehensive SFP+ module, along with an external microcontroller, ROSA and TOSA. It supports both LLA and EDC modes on the receiver side and incorporates all the operations for transmit laser control. The IC’s distinct design for the laser driver enables low power consumption and utilizes a 2.5 V power supply. The improved EMI performance and the sub-1W power consumption of the IC enables system design with higher port density.

The Chief Executive Officer of Ensphere, Hessam Mohajeri commented that for the ESI-1002 product, the company needed a specialty technology that enabled the transceiver to obtain dense control circuitry.
