Finisar to Expand Broadway PON Fiber-Optic Transceiver Product Line

Provider of subsystems for fiber-optic communications, Finisar has acquired Broadway Networks, which develops transceiver products for FTTx networks.

The operating locations of Broadway include Suzhou and Beijing in China, and San Jose in California. Finisar will expand its footprint in China through this acquisition. Finisar is currently operating its facilities in Shanghai and Shenzhen.

Broadway Networks has made a pluggable fiber-optic transceiver, which includes an Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) Optical Network Unit in a small-form-factor pluggable (SFP) format. The fiber-optic transceiver allows customer premises equipment, routers, and switches to be directly linked to PON networks. This approach, called the ‘System on a Transceiver’, provides specific benefits for PON networks, which are used to provide broadband services to wireless backhaul, businesses, and multi-dwelling units. Finisar is likely to follow a product roadmap to expand the advanced technology of Broadway to the Gigabit PON (GPON) sector.

In addition, Broadway has developed a Smart SFP along with integrated remote management functionality. The Smart SFP allows telecom carriers to diagnose and monitor the fiber links that link customer sites, and to reduce costs of operations in the process.
