MP Birla Group to Receive BSNL Fibre Optic Network Project

Vindhya Telelinks, a MP Birla Group company, will receive a major contract from BSNL to construct a fibre-optic cable network for the armed forces in India. The company, along with Aster and Telecommunications Consultants India (TCIL), was the lowest bidder for the fibre-optic project.

The optical cable project will allow the armed forces to utilize the alternate network to meet their communication needs. The armed forces will vacate extra frequencies for commercial telephony applications. The defence project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2012.

Under the project, approximately 57,000 kms of fibre-optic cable will be built for the Air force, Navy and the Army. The armed forces have signed an agreement with the communication ministry. Under the terms of the deal, the defence forces will construct an alternate network to meet their communication requirements. Recently, the armed forces have vacated 3G airwaves as part of the agreement.
