Samsung Electronics has introduced 8 MP and 12 MP back side illuminated (BSI) CMOS image sensors that are housed in a 1/3.2" package.
8 MP and 12 MP Backlit CMOS Image Sensors
The new image sensors called the S5K3H2 and the S5K3L1 offer an image quality equivalent to that of a point and shoot cameras. The sensors offer 1080 p full high-definition (HD) video recording and improve low-light imaging.
The 8 MP S5K3H2 image sensor is based on Samsung¡¦s sophisticated 1.4 µ BSI technology. It offers camera phones a frame speed of 15 fps at full resolution. The sensor¡¦s slender form factor allows it to be fixed into an auto focus camera module measuring 8.5x8.5 mm. The sensor extends battery life as it functions at 1.2 V of power and can take 1080 p video at a speed of 30 fps and 720 p video at a speed of 60 fps. In the faster shooting mode, the sensor can capture VGA videos of 640x480 p at a speed of 120 fps to perform slow motion playback.
The 12 MP S5K3L1 is an ultra compact 1.12 µ pixel imager that allows camera phones to take 12 MP still images at a frame speed of 30 fps, 1080 p full HD video recording at 60 fps, 720 p video at 90 fps and VGA videos at 120 fps. The sensor has an on-chip pixel correction functionality to compensate luminance and color response differences to tackle image distortion.
