Provider of digital optical networking solutions, Infinera announced that it has become a partner in the United States Unified Community Anchor Network (U.S. UCAN). The U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) had granted $62.5 million to Infinera under the federal broadband stimulus program, in July 2010.
The National LambdaRail, Internet2, Indiana University, and the Northern Tier Network Consortium are leading the U.S. UCAN partnership. Infinera will offer support to the partnership as being a part of the matching funds for the NTIA.
U.S. UCAN will utilize the Digital Optical Networks of Infinera, as part of the 3.2 Tb/s network plan. The intended network will provide support to 200 thousand community anchor institutions, including public safety organizations, health centers, community colleges, libraries, and schools, across the U.S. The network will offer services such as next-generation capabilities, including distance learning and telemedicine, to help rural regions utilize technology.
The Infinera DTN network is an optical networking system that is powered by photonic integrated circuits. It is deployed all over the world in metro and long-haul networks. The network integrates GMPLS-powered service intelligence, integrated digital bandwidth management, and high-capacity DWDM transport, in one platform.
Internet2 chose the Infinera DTN network in 2006, to provide its members the advantages of Digital Optical Networks. The Digital Optical Network technology allows the Infinera network to offer versatility and scalability. The Infinera DTN networks provide at least 100 Gb/s capacity on each route in the network. The DTN network also offers network management and easy operation.
