TSMC to Construct New LED Production Line

Silicon IC manufacturing foundry, TSMC, has assigned US$101.6 million for a new LED manufacturing line. The company has begun the construction of its first LED production fab in Taiwan’s Hsinchu Science Park. In addition, TSMC has also assigned $218 million to build a fab, which will be used to manufacture thin-film solar PV modules.

TMSC will construct the LED fab in two phases. In the first phase, investment for equipment and plant is anticipated to touch $172.5 billion. The equipment move-in and the volume production will take place in the Q4 of 2010 and the Q1 of 2011, respectively. The company will make plans on the second-phase development based on future business requirements.

TSMC’s President of New Businesses, Rick Tsai, stated that the LED lighting is a reliable market. The company will leverage its expertise to design and combine LED technology, process, testing and packaging.
