Cable & Wireless, a leading telecommunication company, has announced that it is going to build a new fibre optic telecommunication network in St Helier at a cost of £2.4 million pounds. Work is expected to commence shortly. A number of trial holes will be dug around St Helier, and the cable-laying process will be carried out in late August 2010.
The fibre optic project will enable business organizations in St Helier to access the rest of the globe. The network will provide a new communication route and will bring more competition to the fixed line telecommunication market. This will significantly bring down prices for local business customers.
Cable & Wireless and Geomarine will collaborate with partners to reduce disruptions to businesses and road users in St Helier.
Cable & Wireless’ Chief Executive in Jersey, Graham Hughes, stated that the fibre-optic network will provide business services and private circuits to the finance industry, and will bring in new services for the local organizations. He informed that the company is working with the Parish of St Helier and Transport & Technical Services to reduce disruptions during the cable–laying process.
