ESG Upgrades Landfill Monitoring Systems with Fibre-Optic Cabling

Environmental Scientifics Group (ESG), a UK-based company specialized in environmental testing and inspection, has upgraded the landfill monitoring systems with fibre-optic cabling in Staffordshire County Council.

The automatic Landfill Monitoring Systems monitor the boreholes’ properties, and transmit alarms and data using modems to ESG and the client.

ESG currently has an internet-friendly monitoring system to monitor boreholes. However, the closest internet access point is 120 metres away in the Staffordshire site, hence a linking mechanism is needed. To solve this issue, trenches were made between the CCTV controller and the system cabin. In the trenches, fibre-optic cable, which was armoured to protect from local wildlife, was laid. This upgrade has given ESG and Staffordshire County Council non-stop wireless data access, without the help of an internet modem.

ESG’s Operations Director, Stuart Hunneyball, stated that for the first time they have laid a fibre-optic cabling. The wireless monitoring expands the services they can provide for environmental monitoring and site investigation, Hunneyball said.
