Manufacturer of UVC (ultraviolet) LEDs, Crystal IS, announced that the UVC LEDs (ultraviolet light emitting diodes) have demonstrated improved lifetime, efficiency and power at a germicidal wavelength of 250 nm.
According to the testing results, the LEDs have the required performance to replace the mercury disinfection lamps. The LEDs are constructed on AlN (Aluminum Nitride) substrate.
The energy-efficient LEDs are suitable for use in air and water sterilization products, and can be deployed in commercial and residential systems namely counter-tops and water cooler systems. The diodes can also be used in large-scale applications such as in municipal and industrial purification processes.
Leo Schowalter, Chief Technical Officer of Crystal IS, stated that to manufacture LEDs at the specified wavelength was a difficult task and sapphire substrates do not produce the desired results. However, the company has overcome these practical issues of power and lifetime results, he said.
Crystal IS’ Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Steven Berger, commented that they are moving from research orientation to commercialization and improvement, and are also extending their partner and investor base to take a key lead in the emerging sector.
