NASA's Aqua Satellite Infrared Imagery Reveals Fading Rare South Atlantic Storm 90Q

Just one day after it formed, the southern Atlantic Ocean the now former sub-tropical storm 90Q appeared to be fizzling out on NASA satellite imagery. Infrared imagery from NASA's Aqua satellite showed little convection associated with the storm on March 12. Sub-tropical and tropical storms are rare in the Southern Atlantic, and this one marks the third since 2004.

TRMM Satellite Flies over Tropical Storm Bavi, Finds Heavy Rain in the Western Quadrant of the Storm

After Tropical Storm Bavi formed in the Northwestern Pacific Ocean, NASA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's TRMM satellite passed overhead and found heavy rain occurring in the western quadrant of the storm. A tropical storm watch is in effect for Ujae and Enewetakin in the western Marshall Islands as Bavi nears.

Innovative Computer Vision System Helps Determine Compactness of Bunches of Grapes

Researchers of the Universitat Politècnica de València and the Valencian Institute of Agrarian Research (IVIA) and the Instituto de Ciencias de la Vid y del Vino (Research Centre of Vine-and- Wine-related Science) (ICVV) (University of La Rioja-CSIC-Government of La Rioja) have developed a new computer vision system that helps to determine the compactness of bunches of grapes, a characteristic that strongly influences the quality of the grape and the wine.

Deepest Total Eclipse of the Sun in the UK

On 20 March a total eclipse of the Sun will take place, visible from the North Atlantic Ocean. Observers in the UK and Ireland will see a partial solar eclipse, with up to 97% of the Sun blocked out. This will be the deepest eclipse in the UK since 1999 and until 2026.

SLAC X-Ray Laser Reveals Inner Structure of Infectious Mimivirus

For the first time, researchers have produced a 3-D image revealing part of the inner structure of an intact, infectious virus, using a unique X-ray laser at the Department of Energy’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.
