Differential Interference Contrast Microscopy Research Wins ABC Best Paper Award

The Springer journal Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry (ABC) has chosen the chemist Wei Sun (26) as the recipient of its Best Paper Award 2008. Sun is the lead author of a paper in ABC on developing advanced tools for in vivo biological imaging. The award, including the 1,000 euro prize, was created by Springer to help exceptional young scientists establish their research careers.

Messing, distinguished professor of ceramic science and engineering, and his group at Pennsylvania State University, are developing a brand new class of ceramics that are so pure and perfectly transparent, they can be used as a substitute for crystals in solid-state lasers.

The anisotropy imaging technique is now available for the serial equipment of the LSM 710 laser scanning microscope from Carl Zeiss. It supplements the special imaging techniques such as RICS (Raster Image Correlation Spectroscopy) and FCS (Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy) already possible with the LSM 710.

Carl Zeiss Installs 1,500th GEMINI SEM at Dresden University of Technology

Carl Zeiss SMT today officially put into service the 1,500th GEMINI®-class scanning electron microscope. The customer is the "Center for Non-Destructive Nano Evaluation nanoeva®" in Dresden, a joint facility of the Electronics Packaging Laboratory (German abbreviation: IAVT) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Non-Destructive Testing (IZFP-D) through its Dresden-based department.
