Convergent Dental Adds New Extra Coarse Cutting Spot Size to Solea CO2 Dental Laser

Convergent Dental Inc., a privately held dental device company, today announced the addition of a new extra coarse cutting 1.25 mm-XC spot size to Solea, the first FDA approved, CO2 9.3 micron dental laser for hard and soft tissue. This new spot size increases the Solea’s industry-leading speed by a factor of four which makes it easier than ever to quickly remove large amounts of tooth structure at or above drill speed.

New Vascular Optical Tomographic Imaging System to Diagnose, Monitor Peripheral Artery Disease

Approximately 8 to 12 million people in the United States alone are suffering from peripheral arterial disease (PAD), a common vascular problem that is caused by narrowing of the arteries as a result of plaque buildup. The plaque accumulation leads to an insufficient blood flow to the body's extremities and increases a person's risk for heart attack and stroke by up to six times. PAD is also one of the most serious complications of diabetes.

MRI Helps Visualize Pancreas Inflammation Linked to Type 1 Diabetes

A pilot study led by researchers at Joslin Diabetes Center has revealed that it is possible to use magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to "see" the inflammation in the pancreas that leads to type 1 diabetes. This discovery could be a boon for research on methods to slow or halt the disease at an early stage, and could also guide insights into how diabetes progresses.

Raman Spectroscopy Can Successfully Detect Cancerous Tissue Following Laser Ablation

Surgeons rely on 200-year-old techniques based on sight and touch when removing cancer, to determine how much to remove and what to leave alone. Laser technology pioneered at Florida Atlantic University has the promise to help a surgeon better determine if an area is cancer or healthy tissue. Moreover, when combined with laser treatment for cancer, this work lays the groundwork for laser robotic treatment of cancer.

New MRI Technique to Better Detect, Evaluate NAFLD in Children

Between 5 and 8 million children in the United States have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), yet most cases go undiagnosed. To help address this issue, researchers at UC San Diego School of Medicine have developed a new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based technique to help clinicians and researchers better detect and evaluate NAFLD in children. The study is published Feb. 5 in Hepatology.
