Bookham, Inc. (NASDAQ: BKHM) has announced that its flagship high performance generation eight (G08) optical chip, designed for use in signal amplification in telecommunications networks, has achieved a combined total of 300 million field hours.
A single semiconductor laser chip with world-record wavelength tuning range of 200 nanometers - from 500 to 700 nanometers - has been demonstrated by a research team led by Cun-Zheng Ning, a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering in the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering at Arizona State University.
Daylight Solutions is pleased to announce that on Wednesday, January 28, 2009, the company was presented with a 2008 Prism Award. The Prism Awards recognize the best in innovative technology within the multi-billion dollar photonics industry. Daylight Solutions received a Prism Award in the Laser category for its broadly tunable, CW Mode-hop-free laser system.
"These new pictures are instantaneous snap-shots of energy being transported between electrons across a protein. Remarkably, the pictures go further in unravelling the complex way the electrons interact. This gives us something akin to a fingerprint for electronic couplings," says Dr Ian Mercer from the School of Physics at University College Dublin, the lead author of the new study, who is a visiting researcher at Imperial College London.
Future telescopes, with mirrors half the size of a football field, will need special components to deal with the light they collect. Astronomers are turning to photonic devices that guide and manipulate light inside specially-designed materials. The greatest potential, which is described in the latest issue of Optics Express, the Optical Society's (OSA) open-access journal, may lie in a laser-based technique that carves out micron-sized light pathways in three dimensions.
JPK Instruments, a world leading manufacturer of nanoanalytic instrumentation for research in life sciences and soft matter, has won the international Prism Award for Photonics Innovation in the USA. The Berlin-based company managed to beat out its direct competitors following a review and ranking of more than 135 products and applications by a panel of international judges.
The new Genesis™ 532-2000 S from Coherent Inc. (Santa Clara, CA) (Nasdaq: COHR) is a 2000 mW CW, green (532 nm) laser that provides the first compact and high value alternative to diode-pumped solid state DPSS lasers in scientific and OEM applications. This is the first multi-watt green laser with performance optimized for these markets based on Coherent's unique, optically pumped semiconductor laser (OPSL) technology.
Energized by improvements in the technologies that have produced dramatic increases in light output for both high brightness (HB) and color, and significant extensions of their life spans, Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs) have powerful and vocal proponents among local, state and federal governments, commercial industries and private citizens. These groups all are encouraging widespread acceptance and adoption of LEDs as a viable mainstream and green technology.
Denbighshire-based high-tech company Laser Micromachining Limited (LML) is set to play a crucial role in a European Space Agency (ESA) mission to Mars after developing a vital component in the next generation of space technology.
To most people, the word "ceramics," refers to opaque clay flower pots or translucent porcelain tea cups. But not all ceramics block or scatter light. Gary L. Messing, distinguished professor of ceramic science and engineering, and his group at Pennsylvania State University, are developing a brand new class of ceramics that are so pure and perfectly transparent, they can be used as a substitute for crystals in solid-state lasers.
