Astronomy + Astrophysics Publishes First Analysis of Multi-Color Photometric Catalog of Stars in Milky Way Bulge

Astronomy & Astrophysics published the first analysis of a catalog of 84 million individual stars in the Milky Way bulge as a part of the VVV ESO public survey. This gigantic data set allows building the largest, deepest, and most accurate color-magnitude diagram ever produced, containing more than ten times more stars than any previous study.

New Study Suggests Orphaned Stars Produce Infrared Light from Galaxy Halos

Could it be that dark matter "halos" — the huge, invisible cocoons of mass that envelop entire galaxies and account for most of the matter in the universe — aren't completely dark after all but contain a small number of stars? Astronomers from UCLA, UC Irvine and elsewhere make a case for that in the Oct. 25 issue of the journal Nature.

Nikon Awards Top Honor to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital for Excellence in Photomicrography

Among thousands of entries, Nikon has awarded its top honor to Jennifer Peters, Ph.D., and Michael Taylor, Ph.D., of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital for their photomicrograph, "The blood-brain barrier of a live zebrafish embryo." It is believed to be the first image showing the formation of the blood-brain barrier in a live animal.

Scientists Use NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope to Explain the Mystery Behind Infrared Light

A new study using data from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope suggests a cause for the mysterious glow of infrared light seen across the entire sky. It comes from isolated stars beyond the edges of galaxies. These stars are thought to have once belonged to the galaxies before violent galaxy mergers stripped them away into the relatively empty space outside of their former homes.
