Lumentum Announces Availability of PicoBlade 2 Ultrafast Laser

Lumentum Holdings Inc. today announced that it has dramatically reduced the size of its industry-leading PicoBlade ultrafast laser. Available today, the PicoBlade 2 provides additional capabilities in a footprint 50 % smaller than its predecessor. PicoBlade 2 will be at Lumentum’s booth #2017 at Photonics West at Moscone Center in San Francisco, Calif.

PTB Scientists Build Highly Accurate Optical Single-Ion Clock

Atomic clock experts from the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) are the first research group in the world to have built an optical single-ion clock which attains an accuracy which had only been predicted theoretically so far. As early as 1981, Hans Dehmelt, who was to be awarded a Nobel prize later, had already developed the basic notions of how to use an ion kept in a high-frequency trap to build a clock which could attain the – then unbelievably low – relative measurement uncertainty in the range of 10–18.

Novel Terahertz Transmitter Could Open New Frontier in Wireless Communications

Hiroshima University, the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology, and Panasonic Corporation announced the development of a terahertz (THz) transmitter capable of signal transmission at a per-channel data rate of over ten gigabits per second over multiple channels at around 300 GHz. The aggregate multi-channel data rate exceeds one hundred gigabits per second. The transmitter was implemented as a silicon CMOS integrated circuit, which would have a great advantage for commercialization and consumer use.
