NASA Launches Solar Dynamics Observatory That Will Take Sun's Images Every 0.75 Seconds

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, lifted off Thursday from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station's Launch Complex 41 on a first-of-a-kind mission to reveal the sun's inner workings in unprecedented detail. The launch aboard an Atlas V rocket occurred at 10:23 a.m. EST.

ITS Plans to Construct Solar Cell Enhancement Factory in Germany

The photovoltaic industry in Eastern Germany has received a further boost from Norwegian solar company ITS Innotech Solar. The company has acquired land for a new investment in the Eastern German city of Halle, with plans to construct a factory to increase power of solar cells. ITS was assisted in the investment process by Germany Trade & Invest.

Zayo's Fibre-Optic Network Between New York and Chicago Provides Low Latency Transmission

Zayo Bandwidth, a regional provider of fiber based bandwidth infrastructure, and a provider of carrier neutral colocation services, announced today that it has deployed a low latency route between major carrier hotels in New York and Chicago. The route, which was built on Zayo Bandwidth's operated network, was deployed in order to support algorithmic trading requirements for financial and carrier customers. The network not only provides low latency transmission capabilities, but also physical path diversity from other common carrier long-haul backbone routes.

IBM (IBM) today announced it has built a solar cell -- where the key layer that absorbs most of the light for conversion into electricity, is made entirely of readily-available elements -- that set a new world record for efficiency and holds potential for enabling solar cell technology to produce more energy at a lower cost. Comprised of copper (Cu), tin (Sn), zinc (Zn), sulfur (S), and/or selenium (Se), the cell's power conversion demonstrates an efficiency of 9.6 percent -- 40 percent higher than the value previously attained for this set of materials.
