UK-Based Nanotechnology Company Opens New Centre of Excellence in India

On 10 February 2010 materials characterization expert Malvern Instruments opened a third centre of excellence in India, established through its joint venture company Malvern Aimil Instruments Pty. Located in Delhi, and designed to serve customers in the north and north east of India, the new centre of excellence houses laboratories that are equipped with a range of Malvern systems and staffed by a full time applications team. They will provide demonstrations and deliver training, applications and technical support as well as undertaking sample analysis.

UV Blocking Glass Can Increase Lifetime and Display Quality of LCDs

Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) technology and display quality continues to evolve, while prices for LCDs have declined dramatically in the last few years. These two factors have helped to increase demand for LCDs in a variety of new and challenging applications, such as outdoor displays, where environmental conditions such as high ambient light and heat build-up can affect display quality. This has created a need for unique solutions to help extend the lifetime and display quality of LCDs in these conditions. One such solution is the use of UV blocking glass.

ORA Releases New Illumination Design and Analysis Software

LightTools® 7.0 is the new release of the popular world-class illumination design and analysis software from Optical Research Associates (ORA®). LightTools 7.0 supports Windows 7 and delivers expanded capabilities for both model construction and system analysis. For example, complex light source models can now be created instantly from any geometric object, including those generated in LightTools using Boolean operations on basic shapes, or imported from other CAD software, such as SolidWorks®, using the LightTools SolidWorks Link Module. The ability to make any object a source provides an appreciable advantage to designers of infrared imaging systems in particular.

Mitsubishi Achieves High Photoelectric Conversion Efficiency in Silicon PV Cell

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (TOKYO:6503) announced today that it has achieved a very high photoelectric conversion efficiency of 14.8% in a 5mm x 5mm thin-film silicon photovoltaic (PV) cell. Photoelectric conversion efficiency is the rate at which sunlight energy is converted into electric current, with higher rates meaning more output. The thin-film silicon PV cell developed by Mitsubishi Electric has a triple junction structure that utilizes a majority of the solar spectrum for higher efficiency.
