OFS and Hengtong Sign Deal to Manufacture Optical Fiber Preforms

Hengtong Optic-Electric and OFS have entered into a deal to form a joint venture company called Jiangsu OFS Hengtong Optical Technology, in China. The new joint venture will produce and distribute optical fiber preforms. The new company is the realization of a wider commercial cooperation that has been developed by the companies for the past three years.

As per the agreement, OFS, a wholly owned subsidiary of Furukawa Electric, will offer its expertise in the advanced VAD (Vapor Axial Deposition) optical preform technology to the greenfield operation. Hengtong, a Chinese optical fiber company, will provide its expertise in the Chinese optical fiber cable manufacturing market.

The CEO of OFS, Dr. Timothy F. Murray said the joint venture is an important strategic investment for them in China. He further commented that the Chinese government is in the process of creating a worldwide competitive telecommunication infrastructure by making continuous 3G and FTTX rollouts.
