ASU Cowley Center to Install Aberration-Corrected Electron Microscopes

The John Wheatley Education and Outreach Room was dedicated for Solid State Science at LeRoy Eyring Center of Arizona State University.

John Wheatley handled the operation of the John M. Cowley Center for High Resolution Electron Microscopy laboratory for a period of 25 years. Wheatley’s colleagues credit him for his efforts for making the center as one of the major electron microscopy hubs across the globe.

The Room will be utilized for an educational program called Science is Fun. The program is organized for K-12 school teachers, school and university students, industry researchers and university faculty.

Ray Carpenter, Professor of Eyring Center, stated that the lab’s operation under Wheatley was crucial in gaining the National Science Foundation’s support to acquire sophisticated aberration-corrected electron microscopes. The microscopes will be set up in 2011. He added that electron microscopes are intricate electromechanical devices that necessitate regular care and attention to operate efficiently, but Wheatley was quite successful at this task.
