ZTE and China Telecom Sign Passive Optical Network Contract

Network solutions and telecommunications equipment provider, ZTE announced that it has secured a Passive Optical Network (PON) contract from China Telecom, a global telecommunications operator. The announcement was made at CommunicAsia2010.

Under the new contract, ZTE will offer its advanced passive access system called the ZXA10 xPON to support China Telecom’s new City Optical Network project. The network equipment provides superior DBA and multicast functions and supports subscriber access services namely CATV, IPTV, VoIP and HSI.

The City Optical Network project was launched to provide high-speed broadband access for customers. Under this plan, China Telecom will deploy around 20 million lines of optical broadband equipment to rural areas and major cities in China. Both rural and city areas will have a broadband access of up to 12 Mbps and 100 Mbps, respectively.

China Telecom and ZTE began their strategic business relationship in 2004. Over the six-year period, ZTE’s xPON equipment has gained a collective market share of more than 40% in China. The company has also assisted the Shanghai Telecom in its City Optical Network project, and recently installed an FTTx network in the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.
