The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has granted a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I program to the Universal Display Corporation, a leading manufacturer of energy-efficient lighting and display products. Under the program, the Universal Display will evaluate the performance potential of the PHOLED lighting panels so as to meet the DOE requirements for common lighting applications.
Universal Display will design and develop the PHOLED lighting panels and will analyze the effects of the operating temperature on their performance. The UniversalPHOLED technology and products significantly reduce the heat during panel operation, unlike traditional fluorescent lighting products.
Normally lighting panels generate a small amount of heat when they are operated at high brightness levels. Universal Display believes that controlling this generated heat may improve the performance of the OLED lighting panels. The company will utilize the 6x6 panels to address these problems. The study may help develop advanced thermal management technologies to promote improved performance of the OLED lighting panels for general lighting applications.
The President and CEO of Universal Display, Steven V. Abramson, stated that the OLED lighting technology could deliver significant benefits to the environment by replacing the present generation of inefficient lighting products. He added that DOE’s support has helped the company to make crucial advancements in the OLED lighting technology.
