An agreement has been signed by Shell and Petroleum Geo-Services (PGS) to manufacture sophisticated fiber optics seismic sensing equipment. High channel counts with advanced sensors retrieve extra seismic energy and eliminate noise, thus enabling improved exploration decisions.
Shell will utilize the sensing system for reservoir monitoring and onshore exploration projects. The sensing system, which incorporates PGS's advanced fiber optic technology, will provide a dynamic solution and will help in overcoming the challenges faced with traditional sensing systems such as reducing the system weight during field operations.
PGS’ Integrated Reservoir Services, which are based on OptoSeis permanent reservoir monitoring equipment, enhances recovery from the present reservoirs.
Shells’ Vice President of Exploration Technology, Dirk Smit, stated that the company’s technologists were the first to utilize the OptoSeis technology for onshore seismic applications.
The Vice President of PGS, Thorbjorn Rekdal, expects that the collaboration will mark a significant milestone in the sensing industry, and improved data will enable both the companies to leverage their seismic expertise, imaging and processing technology.
