OmniVision Introduces System-on-a-Chip Sensor for Cameras

OmniVision Technologies has launched a 5 MP system-on-a-chip (SOC) sensor for cameras that has been developed targeting the autofocus (AF) camera phone market. The product is named OV5640 and is built on the 1.4-micron OmniBSI backside illumination (BSI) technology developed by OmniVision. OV5640 ensures excellent performance of camera phones in terms of photography and HD video.

The OV5640 has a JPEG compression engine that facilitates easy data transfer. The product also supports multiple outputs as it possesses a dual lane MIPI interface and digital video port (DVP) parallel interface. The automatic image control functions of the sensor possesses an automatic white balance (AWB), automatic band filter (ABF) and automatic black level calibration (ABLC).

Vinoo Margasahayam, marketing manager of OmniVision, stated that the OmniBSI technology offers low-light sensitivity and an ultra compact camera module which are essential for today’s ultra-thin handsets.
