Spire Semiconductor Awarded MDA Contract to Develop Efficient Solar Cells

Spire Corporation, SPIR, announced that its subsidiary, Spire Semiconductor, LLC, was awarded a Missile Defense Agency (MDA) contract. According to the contract, Spire Semiconductor has to develop efficient, multi-junction solar cells for space applications.

Ed Gagnon, Spire Semiconductor, LLC general manager, said that the MDA contract was a timely award as it supports the terrestrial solar cell business. With the MDA contract, Spire Semiconductor will deploy its expertise and capabilities in concentrator photovoltaic (CPV) cell technology for terrestrial and space solar cell applications.

Roger G. Little, Spire Corporation CEO, stated that the contract offers the validation of the approach used by Spire to increase the efficiency while reducing the concentrator solar cells’ cost. Spire Corporation is eager to work in cooperation with the MDA to develop efficient solar cells for the users.
