OSA Appreciates Recognition of Laser’s Anniversary by House of Representatives

The Optical Society (OSA) lauded the U.S. House of Representatives for passing the Resolution 1310 regarding ‘Recognizing the 50th Anniversary of Laser.’ The House Resolution 1310, which was introduced by Rep. Vernon Ehlers (R-Mich.), was passed.last week.

The resolution acknowledges the early contributions made by James Gordon, Nikolay Basov, Theodore Maiman, Charles Townes, Herbert Zeiger and Aleksandr Prokhorov towards the development of laser. It also recognizes the LaserFest and the importance of laser in the society and economy of U.S.

During the debate in the House floor, Congress members explained the importance and impact of the laser to the Representatives. The Congress members also brought the attention of the Representatives to the need for the investment on basic research and development of laser. Later, the resolution was passed by the House.

For the year 2010, the total sales of lasers worldwide are anticipated to reach above $5.9 billion. Currently, laser technologies are used in numerous applications including LASIK surgery, DVDs, fiber optics and barcode scanners.

The CEO of OSA, Elizabeth Rogan, thanked the House of Representatives for understanding the importance of laser. She said laser has entered into all sectors as a vital technology, since its invention 50 years ago. It has become the main technology in various fields such as healthcare, IT, transportation, telecommunications and micro-electronics, she noted.

Commenting on the passing of resolution, Rep. Giffords said this recognition of laser highlights more than its technological importance. It also showcases the benefits of the investment on laser to the society.
