Malvern to Exhibit OINDP Instruments That Complement its Spraytec Laser Diffraction Analyzer

Malvern Instruments will participate in this year’s Respiratory Drug Delivery conference (RDD 2010) from 25 – 29 April in Orlando, FL, exhibiting instruments that deliver detailed information about orally inhaled and nasal drug products (OINDPs). Malvern provides a suite of tools that support formulation and device development.

Spraytec laser diffraction analyzer

Complementing the company’s Spraytec laser diffraction analyzer for particle size measurement is the Morphologi G3, which delivers automated particle shape analysis. In combination, these systems deliver data that can be applied to accelerate and optimise the development of inhaled products. In dry powder inhaler development for example, Spraytec is used to examine powder entrainment and dispersion, while the Morphologi G3 enables study of the powder structure before and after delivery. Together they allow the process of dispersion to be followed closely and understood in detail.

Spraytec is an advanced laser diffraction analyzer that provides real-time spray particle size measurement, capturing the fine detail of aerosol formation and dynamic droplet behaviour. With a wide dynamic range (0.1 to 2000 microns) it can simultaneously measure both the sub-10 micron fraction and larger particles; droplets produced at the beginning and end of a nasal spray event for example.

A fully automated image analysis-based particle characterization system, the Morphologi G3 delivers particle size and shape information for wet and dry samples, and for the analysis of foreign particulate matter collected on filters. Capable of analyzing particles from 0.5 to 10000 µm, and capturing microscope quality images of hundreds of thousands of particles in just a few minutes, it measures a wide range of size and shape parameters.
