Mercury Solar Systems, one of the leading solar integrators on the East Coast, today announced that it has installed one of the larger commercial solar energy systems on Long Island for Suffolk Transportation Service, Inc., operators of school and public buses throughout Suffolk County.
The 51 kilowatt (kW) 255-panel system was installed on the company's state-of-the-art headquarters in Bay Shore, NY.
The solar energy system will produce approximately 57,623 kilowatt hours (kW/hr) of electricity annually and will save Suffolk Transportation approximately $10,718 in electricity costs per year. It will also offset more than 71,610 pounds of carbon dioxide, which is equivalent to recycling 964,920 cans of soda, not burning 3,687 gallons of gasoline and planting 5 acres of trees.
"The Long Island commercial solar market continues to rapidly develop. LIPA's cash rebates reduce the initial investment of going solar by 50% and the federal tax credit reduces it by an additional 30%. For a commercial solar system that translates into an extremely attractive return on investment that will generate pollution free electricity savings up to 40 years," said Kevin P. Harvey, General Manager, Mercury Solar Systems. "We believe these financials are very compelling and have increased our internal resources to meet the needs of this growing customer base in 2010 and beyond."
