Kopin® Corporation (NASDAQ: KOPN), the leader in mobile display technology for consumer, industrial, commercial and military applications, today announced that it has begun volume production of its new CyberDisplay® VGA LVS and WVGA LVS displays for broad commercial sale. With tiny 3.75 x 11.25-µm color dots, the full-color VGA (640 x 480 resolution) and WVGA (864 x 480 resolution) displays are 0.35” and 0.44” diagonal, respectively.
Kopin’s new displays are about 40 percent smaller than its existing displays of the same resolution, yet exhibit more vibrant color and consume less power. Shipments of the CyberDisplay VGA LVS displays are already underway for Samsung Electronics’s brand new NX10 hybrid DSLR-style camera and Vuzix Corporation’s Wrap 920 3D video eyewear.
“The superior color image, compact size and low power consumption make these new displays ideal for portable 3D systems and other devices that enable access to mobile content,” said Dr. John C. C. Fan, Kopin’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “The quality and reliability of the new CyberDisplay VGA LVS have been validated by our two early customers. Our success in advancing these displays with such tiny pixels into volume production is an important milestone. Our ability to produce displays with ever smaller pixels is critical to creating mobile video products which provide high-resolution brilliant color images at prices low enough to allow consumers to access the increasing volume of mobile video content.”
The CyberDisplay WVGA LVS and VGA LVS achieve low power consumption by employing the Company’s two patented innovations: low-voltage architecture, which reduces the input video voltage by half and allows the use of CMOS driver circuits, and clock driverless scanner circuits, which reduce the display panel power to less than 30 mW. Kopin provides a full-function, low-power A912 ASIC that drives the display from standard video inputs. The new displays also achieve better power efficiency through the use of advanced backlights, which provide a higher contrast ratio and more vivid color than conventional technology.
Samsung’s NX10 camera is a compact and innovative DSLR-style camera with an electronic viewfinder. This hybrid camera incorporates an APS-C size 14.6-mega-pixel CMOS sensor and accepts interchangeable zoom lenses. Vuzix’s Wrap 920 is sunglass-style eyewear that displays crystal clear 2D and 3D video in a size equivalent of a 67-inch screen as seen from 10 feet. It connects to all NTSC or PAL audio/video devices including Apple’s iPod and iPhone.
