PMC-Sierra Announces Scholarships for Research on Optical Transport Network

PMC-Sierra, Inc. (NASDAQ:PMCS), the premier Internet infrastructure semiconductor solution provider, today announced the winners of its 2009 scholarship program for the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT).

In a joint effort with BUPT’s Institute of Information Photonics and Optical Communications (IPOC), this year’s program supports in-depth research in Packet Transmission Network (PTN) and Optical Transport Network (OTN) technologies. PMC-Sierra presented scholarships for the following research projects at a ceremony at the BUPT conference hall in Beijing on November 24, 2009:

  • Zhihui Zhang – PhD candidate, Electromagnetic Field and Microwave Technology, research project: MPLS-TP over OTN Node Functional Model and Architecture
  • Rentao Gu – PhD candidate, Electromagnetic Field and Microwave Technology, research project: Key Technologies of QoS in PTN
  • Ke He – PhD candidate, Telecommunication and Information Systems, research project: Time Synchronization in PTN and SDH Hybrid Networks

“Thanks to PMC-Sierra for offering such a great platform and opportunity,” said Professor Ji Yuefeng, executive dean of IPOC. “This joint effort by BUPT and PMC-Sierra continues to be a perfect example of school and corporate alignment to encourage high quality research in optical communications. At BUPT’s Institute of Information Photonics and Optical Communications, we are dedicated to cultivating telecom talents and innovative thinking, and we believe this program will help to drive that mission.”

PMC-Sierra’s 2009 scholarship program supports BUPT’s Institute of Information Photonics and Optical Communication, which owns the university lab that China’s Ministry of Education considers the nation’s key laboratory dedicated to optical communications technology. The program received high-quality research submissions from nine students. Winners were selected after two rounds of joint evaluation by IPOC and PMC-Sierra. Students will conduct their research from December 1, 2009, to April 31, 2010, and present their findings at a technical seminar hosted by BUPT and PMC-Sierra in May 2010.

“I am very impressed by our scholarship winners and the quality of submissions overall,” said Heng Liao, CTO fellow, PMC-Sierra. “BUPT has an excellent reputation as one of China’s top universities specializing in telecom-related technologies. PMC-Sierra is proud to contribute to the school and to support research into PTN and OTN. Our congratulations go to the winners.”
