Motorola's Fiber-to-the-Home Technology Now has a Million Subscribers

Motorola ONTs connect more than one million subscribers to rich consumer experiences via ultra-broadband FTTH technology

Motorola Inc. (NYSE: MOT) Home & Networks Mobility business celebrates an industry milestone today as it ships its one millionth optical network terminal (ONT) for Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) deployments around the globe. In enabling these FTTH networks, Motorola ONTs are accelerating the delivery of ultra-broadband services, enabling rich personalized media experiences such as higher-capacity video, voice and ultra-high-speed Internet services.

Motorola began scaled shipments of ONTs in 2004 and has since risen to a leadership position across the global FTTH marketplace. Supported by world-class engineering, manufacturing and operations, Motorola now offers a full portfolio of international ONTs designed for single family units, multiple dwelling units (MDUs) and small businesses. Enabled by the market-leading AXS2200 and AXS1800 optical line terminals (OLTs), Motorola's family of ONTs delivers premium services such as symmetrical Internet connectivity in hundreds of megabits per second and the highest quality high-definition TV and video on-demand experiences consumers can access today. Motorola FTTH solutions provide density and scalability with multiple deployment options for operators looking to deliver residential and commercial services cost-effectively.

"Of available FTTH technologies, GPON deployments will grow the fastest with a 77.1% CAGR from 2008 through 2013, and Motorola plays a clear role among the leaders within this FTTH segment," said Jeff Heynen, directing analyst at Infonetics Research. "By reaching this impressive milestone of one million BPON and GPON ONT devices shipped, Motorola is successfully demonstrating its ability to support the growing wave of GPON deployments globally."

"Successful deployments around the world prove Motorola's ability to enable service providers to cost-effectively deliver video, voice and Internet services at ultra-broadband speeds," said Joe Cozzolino, senior vice president and general manager, Motorola Access Networks Solutions. "Motorola continues to drive its leadership with successful FTTH network rollouts and the ability to deploy tens of thousands of ONT devices per day."

By deploying Motorola's FTTH solution, operators can eliminate costly, energy-intensive outside plant electronics found in traditional networks. Through FTTH, operators can access a full portfolio of small form factor, energy-efficient indoor ONTs. Motorola's FTTH portfolio includes:

  • Optical Line Termination - Fully redundant, non-blocking, 200 Gbps switching architecture

  • Single Family ONTs - IPTV, RF Overlay Video, 10/100/1000bT Ethernet, VoIP, POTS

  • Small Business ONTs - IPTV, RF Overlay Video, 10/100/1000bT Ethernet, VoIP, POTS

  • MDU ONTs - VDSL2 and Ethernet versions, POTS, IPTV, RF Overlay Video

  • Passive Optical LAN - Next-generation, all-fiber LAN solution for the enterprise

Motorola's FTTH solution will be featured at the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo, October 28 - 30, 2009 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colorado at the Motorola booth #4116.
