Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) will receive two industry awards during Display Week 2009, the annual conference of the Society for Information Display (SID), that will be held May 31 through June 5 in San Antonio, Texas.
Corning’s Jade™ glass for advanced display is a winner in the 2009 Display of the Year Awards (DYA), which recognize innovative display products, components, and applications that hold the most promise for shaping the future of the global display industry.
The DYAs are awarded each year with Gold and Silver honors in three categories: Display of the Year, Display Product of the Year, and Display Component of the Year. Corning received the Gold Award in the Display Component of the Year category for Jade glass substrates.
Jade substrates are optimized for two display technologies — low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) applications and organic, light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) — to solve some of the challenges facing the mobile device industry at a time when the popularity of small mobile devices is at an all-time high.
This is the second time Corning has received a DYA award. The company’s environmentally friendly EAGLE XG™ substrates were similarly honored in 2007.
“The Display of the Year Awards recognize the chief influential technologies across the global display community,” noted Dick McCartney, SID’s DYA Chair. “The caliber of products and technologies nominated this year certainly made the decision process tough on our Awards Committee. We received a number of nominations from around the world, and we are excited to award Corning with the gold honor in the 2009 Display Component category for its Jade Glass for Advanced Display. We truly commend the company’s ongoing commitment to innovation and to shaping the future of today’s display arena.”
SID has also bestowed a major industry honor on Corning’s Chief Technology Officer – East Asia, Dr. Peter L. Bocko. The Special Recognition Award honors outstanding achievements in the following categories: Technical Accom¬plishments, Contributions to Literature, Service to the Society, Entrepreneurial Accomplishments, and Achievements in Education.
SID will recognize Dr. Bocko for his central role in delivering innovative, high-performance glass substrates for the display industry, including environmentally friendly display glass and substrates compatible with polysilicon backplanes for liquid crystal and organic, light-emitting displays.
“For more than two decades, Dr. Bocko has been integral to the advancement of the LCD business at Corning Incorporated,” said James Clappin, president, Corning Display Technologies. “Corning considers this award a formal acknowledgement of what Dr. Bocko’s peers already recognize: the depth and breadth of his contributions to the display industry, as well as the lasting impact his work has had on advancing the science and technology behind the glass.”
Dr. Bocko will be speaking at the SID Investors Conference and in a technical session. Throughout the tradeshow, Corning will present its perspective on what's next in advanced display.
