Solid-state lighting could effectively address global warming concerns, as it is expected to halve energy consumption by lighting, if fully deployed. The growing consumer preference for solid-state lighting over conventional lighting is the primary driver for the Southeast Asian optoelectronics market. Its long-term benefits of energy efficiency, long life, and small size overrule its high initial costs, giving it an edge over its conventional counterparts.
New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (electronics.frost.com), Southeast Asian Optoelectronics Market, finds that the market earned revenues of $179.7 million in 2007, which was an increase of 16.8 percent over the previous year.
The price-per-lumen of solid-state lighting is relatively higher than that of conventional lighting. Nevertheless, the Southeast Asian optoelectronics market is growing, particularly the high-brightness light-emitting diodes (LEDs) segment.
"Moreover, the price-per-lumen is expected to fall in the longer term and improvement in technology is expected to further boost the growth of solid-state lighting," infers Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst CP Liew.
On the downside, the optoelectronics manufacturers and distributors are finding it challenging to get government support to create awareness about the long-term benefits of solid-state lighting devices.
"The governments of Southeast Asian countries must play a more proactive role in promoting the benefits of solid-state lighting and encourage the use of optoelectronics products, in view of the depleting crude oil reserves," concludes Liew. "Governments' support of the use of optoelectronics products in infrastructure planning and development could greatly benefit the market."
