Timbercon, Inc., the fiber optic product and solution manufacturing company providing a vast array of connectivity solutions, has completed manufacturing and delivery of an optical sub assembly module providing GPS communications link between ground control and US military unmanned aerial vehicles.
The optical sub-assembly modules are designed to provide communication between the GCS (Ground Control System) and the internal GPS (Global Positioning System) unit onboard the UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle). This link allows field operators to set reference points and triangulate real time aircraft positioning from GCS in order to operate the UAV in manual flight or autopilot.
The optical sub-assembly module was developed to operate in harsh environments and adverse conditions associated with military field operations. The module incorporates key components including panel mounted MIL-DTL-38999 connectors, optical to radio frequency converter, integrated GPS unit, AC/DC power inputs, and a rugged, weatherproof stainless steel enclosure.
“This application required a very rugged and durable product that not only performed well in most any condition, but is highly reliable as it is the key conduit for UAV position tracking during flight,” said Tim Currier, Key Account Manager for Timbercon.
With the continued expansion of this UAV program, Timbercon expects additional modules to be deployed through Q1 2007.
Timbercon offers optical sub-assembly modules for multiple military and commercial applications from test & measurement to structural survey equipment, with custom design, development, and manufacturing services available to suit most requirements.
