Chrontel, a leading provider of video interface technologies, today announced a new DisplayPort™ device for computer notebooks, ultrabooks and tablets that will enable compatibility with the huge installed base of legacy VGA displays.
Chrontel’s new CH7517 DisplayPort Receiver / VGA Transmitter converts standard DisplayPort video signals generated by a CPU or GPU into the analog VGA format, which is still widely used by external displays.
The CH7517 is compliant with DisplayPort v1.2 and embedded DisplayPort v1.3, and it supports VESA and CEA resolutions up to 1920x1200 @60 Hz. The device integrates three 9-bit DACs to generate analog RGB signals, an internal EDID buffer, and on-chip flash Boot ROM for initialization. The new device is capable of automatic DisplayPort input detection and DAC output detection, which enables autonomous entry to power saving mode.
"Computer monitors and televisions with VGA inputs are still widely available in the market. Such displays represent an enormous installed base that will continue to exist for many years to come," explained Dr. David Soo, Chrontel President and CEO. "Designers of the latest mobile computers want to access these external display resources, and that requires a cost-efficient and power-efficient DisplayPort-to-VGA device."
Pricing and Availability
Chrontel’s CH7517 is currently in production. The device is offered in a 40-pin QFN package, and is available for USD 1.00/ea. in 10K volumes.
