HLDS Introduces HL100 Optical Archiving Library System for Long-term Data Preservation

Hitachi-LG Data Storage, Inc. (HLDS) today unveiled the company’s Optical Archiving Library System (Model HL100). The new product, with its exceptional long-term data archiving capabilities, is targeted at the enterprise market.

HLDS has been a long time market leader in optical disk drives for the IT and PC industries, and the HL100 lives up to its distinguished heritage in terms of both peace-of-mind reliability and stellar long-term data security. Using enterprise quality Blu-ray media, the system boasts media longevity and data survivability. The HL100 enables more sustainable digital archiving to preserve data while at the same time allowing users to scale up capacity by adding libraries. Moreover, it is surprisingly eco-friendly, providing lower power consumption as well as lower CO2 emissions compared to HDD or tape-based solutions. The HLDS Optical Archiving Library System takes advantage of Blu-ray media – a format praised for its superior data density and overall quality – to preserve data for 50 years or more. This ensures that enterprise-level clients get the quality, longevity and even survivability that they need to manage their data archiving needs.

Each library has 50TB of raw capacity, and with nine libraries per rack, a single rack can hold a whopping 450TB. Despite the imposing numbers, the HL100’s power consumption of full rack is a scant 810W in idle mode.

Capacity is important, but it’s a moot point if the system lacks reliability. The HL100 has users covered here as well. Its strong error correcting code (ECC) capabilities make it far more reliable than tape-based systems and ideal for the enterprise market. In addition, since it is intended to facilitate long-term storage, there is less need for data migration. Finally, it cuts down on operating costs, which will no doubt be appealing to business partners and clients looking to safeguard data for the long term without incurring a significant financial burden.

The HL100 will be on sale globally beginning in April this year.
