Micrel Introduces Two New Optical Limiting Amplifiers

Micrel, Inc., an industry leader in high performance analog and high-speed mixed signal, LAN, and timing and communications solutions, today launched the SY88073L and SY88083L, two new limiting post amplifiers.

The devices are ideal for FTTH XGPON.2 ONU/ONT (Optical Network Unit / Optical Network Terminal) applications supporting the build out of next generation PON networks. This product family is also suitable for use in all continuous mode fiber optic or copper cable SFP+ transceiver modules for multi-rate applications from 1G to 12.5Gbps supporting 10G Ethernet, Fibre Channel, OTN, and CPRI/OBSAI data rates. Production samples and pricing are available by contacting Micrel field sales and support personnel or at: www.micrel.com.

Both devices offer user selectable LOS or SD status signals and a wide differential input voltage range of 10mVPP to 1800mVPP for extended link distance operation. Electrical hysteresis of 4dB is provided across a wide LOS/SD threshold range of 4.5mVPP to 30mVPP. Integrated 50 Ohm input and output impedances with CML output, with 30ps typical rise/fall times, optimize high speed signal integrity while reducing external component counts and BOM cost. The TTL compatible JAM input enables a SQUELCH function by routing back the LOS or SD signal. Other features include selectable RXOUT+ / RXOUT- signal polarity (SY88073L).

"These new devices offer an impressive BER differential sensitivity of 10mVPP up to 12.5Gbps with wide range SD Assert and LOS De-Assert user selectable threshold levels, 4dB of electrical hysteresis, and faster SD Assert and LOS De-Assert timing than competitive continuous mode devices," stated Tom Kapucija, director of marketing for the high speed communications business, Micrel. "These features enable link efficiency optimization with increased system reach, higher link up-time and higher payload bandwidth."

"Micrel continues its effort to provide industry leading solutions as carriers address the demand for more data and migrate to NG PON networks using the XGPON.2 protocol. Our new optical limiting amplifiers deliver speed, performance, and features that are critical to solving technical difficulties facing next generation FTTH, Enterprise, and transport networks," stated Rami Kanama, vice president for the timing and communications business group. "With increased link efficiency, system operators can achieve higher data transmission performance and potentially reduce carriers' CapEx and OpEx."

The SY88073L enables user adjustable decision threshold adjustment for optimized Bit Error Rate operation in noisy applications with asymmetrical noise distribution while the SY88083L provides a user selectable Digital Offset Correction function that automatically compensates for internal device offsets in the high speed data path. Improved module manufacturability and reduced cost are achieved via the increased performance margin versus current customer requirements.

Both devices offer a wide power supply range of 3.3V +/-10 percent and come in an industrial temperature range of -40-degC to +85-degC and a tiny 3mm x 3mm, 16 lead QFN package.
