Countdown Begins for BBC Two’s Stargazing Live

The countdown to BBC Two’s Stargazing Live at Royal Holloway has begun this week.

The flagship event for the popular television series will feature a live celebration of astronomy at the University’s campus on Thursday 9th January. Doors will open to 5,000 members of the public who were lucky enough to get their hands on free tickets, as well as members of staff and students, from 6pm-9.30pm.

Hosted by comedian and science presenter Helen Arney, the event at Royal Holloway will coincide with the live Stargazing show, which is to be presented by Professor Brian Cox and Dara O’Briain.

Professor Paul Layzell, Principal of Royal Holloway said: “BBC Stargazing Live is a fantastic opportunity to bring together international experts, amateur astronomers and members of the community to explore the many hidden secrets and wonders of the Universe. The night sky has proven to be a source of inspiration for thousands of years; it challenges us to ask the big questions and we are thrilled to host an event that allows world-renowned experts and members of the public to celebrate and discover astronomy together.”

The evening will include a spectacular televised light show, in which a series of star constellations will be plotted out by more than 40 students from the Department of Physics at Royal Holloway.

Activities on the night are aimed at all ages. Throughout the evening, people will have the chance to view NASA’s ground-breaking footage of the Sun, experience awe-inspiring science demonstrations and enjoy a stargazing medley performed by Royal Holloway’s student choir Absolute Harmony. Live theatrical performances and comedy sketches will also take place, and designated telescope zones will be set up for the occasion.

Those attending will also have the chance to train like astronauts and take part in a variety of exciting, space-themed activities.

A host of leading astronomy experts, including Royal Holloway’s own academics, will be on hand throughout the event to guide visitors through the stargazing experience.
