Dialight announced that the city of Spokane in Washington has installed 132 Dialight LED pedestrian countdown timers for improving the crosswalk safety. The LED signals have been installed also to meet the requirements specified in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) of the U.S. Dept. of Transportation Federal Highways Administration.
For the project, the city utilized the Federal Highways Safety Grant of $100 thousand to pay for the installation at two avenues on Walnut and Maple Streets, and along an avenue from Maple to Division Streets.
The revised MUTCD specifies the need for countdown pedestrian signals with a seven-second pedestrian clearance interval at the new installations. Though the MUTCD do not necessitate retrofitting the current pedestrian signals, it needs all the signals to be converted into countdown units on the subsequent replacement.
The city of Spokane’s Capital Program Manager, Katherine Miller, stated that the LED countdown timers will enhance the safety for the pedestrians walking along the corridor. Miller added that they are satisfied with the simple installation and fast product-delivery of Dialight.
